Hampton, Virginia – Chaka Khan, Boney James, Boys II Men, and Anthony Hamilton -that was the power packed line up for the opening night of the 44th annual Hampton Jazz Fest! Thousands from near and far filled the Hampton Coliseum, Friday to kick off three days of electrifying Jazz, R&B, Blues and Pop Soul!
Boney James wowed crowds as the show opener. The maestro on the sax charmed festival fans with his smooth jazz sounds. 90’s pop sensation Boys II Men set center stage with their greatest hits and dazzling dance moves. One of the music industry’s best, 10 time Grammy award winning Chaka Khan, rocked the audience with her classic favorites and latest grooves.
Anthony Hamilton wrapped up the evening with a high energy-filled performance. He entertained festival fans with his strong vocals, creative and engaging background singers, hot and heavy bellowing horns, cool keys and slamming strings.
The Hampton Jazz Fest is full of rich musical history and culture. The event has been hosted by the City of Hampton and Hampton University since the Hampton Coliseum opened in 1970. The festival originally began in 1968 as a one-time celebration of Hampton University’s 100th Birthday on campus at Armstrong Field. The event was so popular….to become the annual tradition it is today.

On Saturday, fans will get to enjoy the likes of Chrisette Michele, KEM and Soul of Summer, featuring Jonathan Butler, Eric Darius, and Maysa. The jazz fest jams will continue with a SOLD OUT show stopper from Charlie Wilson, AKA “Uncle Charlie, ” formally with the fabulous Gap Band.
On Sunday, DMS, featuring George Duke, Marcus Miller, David Sanborn will take center stage. MAZE featuring Frankie Beverely, Stephanie Mills and Laura Izibor will grace the crowds with their soulful sounds.
