Maysa Leak is just down right rocking the music world with her latest CD Blue Velvet Soul on the Shanachie record label. The powerful love suite of sensational sounds is calm as the ocean’s BLUE; smooth and cool as a VELVET’s touch; and runs with inspiration deep into your SOUL.
This is the kind of music that causes you to just sit back relax, bop you head, snap your fingers and just think to yourself, “umm!” “Maysa – is bringing it home again!” We’re talking about – all the way through her CD is jamming. From the opener Beautiful Dreamer, the cool sounds of Sophisticated Lover (which Maysa sprinkles in suave French), the pleasant groove of Good Morning Sunrise, and onto the funky beats of Put It On Me – this 15 track recording is musical bliss.
“I love this recording and very proud of it,” Maysa told SmoothJazzTimes.com. “The fans love it too. I’m getting just an awesome response which I am so appreciative,” she said. The magical moment for Blue Velvet Soul is when the song “Quiet Fire” set ablaze literally – garnering Maysa her first Grammy nomination ever. Maysa recorded the song as a tribute to one of her favorites, the legendary Nancy Wilson. In fact, Maysa just recently returned from the star-studded awards event in Los Angeles.
Maysa says the Grammy nomination was the culmination of a lifelong dream. “I’ve been in the music business for 23 years – and this Grammy nomination is a huge milestone for me,” she said. “I want to keep it going.” Blue Velvet Soul is a flavor of love. On its musical journey you’ll of course, feel a vibe of in-the-now with today’s funk, rock, rhythm & blues mixes. You’ll also feel as if you’re rockin’ in the disco era of the 70s; then there’s that vivacious velvet voice of smooth jazz that just takes you to another level of listening pleasure. What’s especially dynamic about this powerful musical mix. Is Maysa’s down home personality and grateful spirit. Her wide range of vocal talents expand beyond the microphone. She writes poignantly on this album–and producer Chris “Big Dog” Davis is right there by her side. The two co-wrote six songs on Blue Velvet Soul. Additional dynamic producers such as Eugon Botos also worked on the recording.Maysa recorded the the album during a deep blue time in her life – shortly after the passing of her beloved mother. Maysa says the dedication of her mother’s love, faithful fans, and a spiritual higher power help to tame the tough times. “It was hard going into the studio to record. My mother’s passing was devastating; she was my best friend,” said Maysa. “But my mother wanted me to continue on with the music,” Maysa told SmoothJazzTimes.com. “I miss her… she was my rock.”
Blue Velvet Soul has been a winner since its release last year. It debuted #3 on the Billboard charts and is still a chart topping success among faithful fans. Maysa is on the move performing, planning new music, all for the fans.
